- Approximately 20 scholarships in total (new and renewing students) will be disbursed each year.
- $15,000 for doctoral program students.

Requirements for Saint Mary’s University Durland Scholarships in Graduate Research – PhD
The Following are the requirements for the Scholarship program. Applicants must:
- Exceed the minimum admission criteria for the research-based graduate program to which they have applied
- Scholarship selection will include special consideration of nominees’ planned area of research focus and alignment with priority research themes outlined by the University.
- The University’s Strategic Research Plan should be used as the primary guide for identifying these themes
- a nominee’s alignment with the faculty supervisor’s interests as well as the nominee’s perceived ability to contribute and complement a faculty member’s research objectives will be viewed as a key indicator of student research potential.
Selection Process
- Have completed and submitted the application form for the Durland Scholarships in Graduate Research by or before the deadline of 5:00 pm AST on JANUARY 31, 2025.
- Be planning to do research that is within one the 5 priority Major Research Thematic areas of the SMU Strategic Research Plan.
- Have identified one or more professors at SMU who would likely support, or have expertise in, the area of your planned research.
- Have a demonstrated record of outstanding academic achievement, and show evidence of research ability and/or potential. To promote accessibility, we also consider relevant professional experience of applicants in these assessments, recognizing that academic or research excellence can appear in various ways.
